The first FDA-cleared microneedling device, and one of the most effective ways to rebuild your skin's foundation from the inside out.
There's a reason microneedling has become one of the most talked-about treatments in aesthetics. It works. Not in the vague, "your skin might look a little better" way that some treatments promise, but in a measurable, visible, clinically-backed way. Done correctly, microneedling stimulates your body's own collagen production to improve texture, reduce scarring, smooth fine lines, and produce firmer, healthier skin over time.
But not all microneedling is the same. The device matters. The technique matters. What you pair with it matters. And that's where the conversation gets more interesting.
What Microneedling Actually Does
The concept behind microneedling is simple, even if the biology it triggers is anything but. A device equipped with fine, sterile needles creates thousands of controlled micro-channels in the skin. These tiny punctures are just deep enough to activate your body's wound-healing response without causing real damage to the tissue.
That wound-healing response is the whole point. When your skin detects those micro-injuries, it sends a cascade of signals that trigger three overlapping phases of repair. First, inflammation brings growth factors and immune cells to the area. Then proliferation kicks in as fibroblasts produce new collagen and elastin to rebuild the treated tissue. Finally, remodeling refines and strengthens that new structural matrix over the following weeks and months.
The result is skin that is genuinely rebuilt from within. Not resurfaced, not temporarily plumped, not masked with product. Actually rebuilt. New collagen replaces old, damaged tissue. Scars fill in from the bottom up. Fine lines soften as the dermal layer thickens. Texture evens out as the skin's surface reflects the healthier architecture underneath.
Why SkinPen
There are a lot of microneedling devices on the market, and they are not all equal. SkinPen is the first microneedling device to receive FDA clearance, and that distinction matters more than it might seem.
FDA clearance means SkinPen has been through rigorous clinical testing to demonstrate that it is both safe and effective. It's specifically proven to treat acne scars in patients 22 and older, which is a claim that most microneedling devices cannot legally make because they haven't been through the same review process. When you see a microneedling device without FDA clearance, what you're seeing is a device that hasn't been held to the same clinical standard.
Beyond the regulatory significance, SkinPen is engineered for precision. The needle depth is adjustable, allowing your provider to customize the treatment based on the area being treated and the concern being addressed. Thinner skin around the eyes requires a different depth than thicker skin along the jawline or on the cheeks. That level of control is what separates a clinical microneedling treatment from a one-size-fits-all approach.
At MK Aesthetics, we use SkinPen exclusively because it gives our providers the precision and the clinical backing to deliver consistent, predictable results.
SkinPen+: The Standard Treatment
Our baseline microneedling treatment is what we call SkinPen+. It covers the full face and neck and takes approximately 75 minutes.
The session begins with the microneedling treatment itself. Your provider works across the treatment area with the SkinPen, adjusting needle depth to match each zone of the face and neck. After the microneedling is complete, we follow with a healing LED light panel. LED therapy accelerates tissue repair and reduces inflammation, giving your skin a head start on the recovery process. The session finishes with a massage.
SkinPen+ is ideal for anyone who wants to address skin texture, fine lines, mild scarring, or overall skin quality. Most patients notice visible improvement after a single session, but the real transformation comes with consistency. We typically recommend a series of 3 to 6 treatments spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Each session builds on the collagen production that the previous one initiated, and the cumulative effect is significantly more dramatic than any single treatment alone.

SkinPen+ with PRP: Your Biology, Amplified
PRP stands for Platelet-Rich Plasma, and it's one of the most effective ways to amplify the results of a microneedling treatment.
Here's how it works. Before your microneedling session, we draw a small sample of your blood and process it in a centrifuge. This separates the plasma and concentrates the platelets, which are packed with growth factors that play a central role in tissue repair and regeneration. That concentrated PRP is then applied to your skin during and after the microneedling treatment.
The timing is intentional. The micro-channels created by SkinPen are still open when the PRP is applied, which means those growth factors can penetrate directly into the dermis rather than sitting on top of the skin where they'd have minimal effect. Your skin is essentially absorbing a concentrated dose of its own healing biology at the exact moment it's primed to use it.
The result is a more robust collagen response, faster healing, and more visible improvement in texture, tone, and overall skin quality compared to microneedling alone. PRP is particularly effective for patients dealing with more advanced texture concerns, deeper scarring, or skin that has been chronically depleted by sun damage or aging.

SkinPen+ with PRP and Injections: The Most Targeted Option
For patients who want the most comprehensive microneedling treatment we offer, SkinPen+ with PRP and Injections adds a layer of precision to the PRP protocol.
In addition to applying PRP topically during the microneedling session, your provider also injects PRP directly into targeted problem areas. The most common application is the under-eye hollows, where volume loss and thinning skin create shadows and a tired appearance that topical treatments alone can't fully address. But the injections can also target lip lines, smile lines, or other areas of concern depending on your specific needs.
Before the treatment, you'll discuss your areas of concern with your provider so the injection sites can be tailored to your goals. The combination of surface-level microneedling with PRP and targeted PRP injections creates a treatment that addresses skin quality broadly while also treating specific structural concerns with concentrated precision.
This is the option we recommend for patients who are serious about maximizing their results and who have specific areas that need more focused attention than surface treatment alone can provide.

What Microneedling Can Treat
One of the reasons microneedling is so widely recommended is that it addresses a broad range of concerns through a single mechanism. By stimulating collagen production and remodeling, SkinPen+ can improve the appearance of acne scars, including both atrophic (indented) and rolling scars that are notoriously difficult to treat with topical products. Fine lines and wrinkles soften as new collagen thickens the dermis. Skin texture becomes smoother and more refined. Pore size can improve as the surrounding tissue firms up. And overall skin tone and luminosity improve as healthier tissue replaces damaged cells.
The neck is another area where microneedling is particularly effective. Neck skin is thinner and more prone to visible aging, and it often gets neglected in routine skincare. SkinPen+ treats the full face and neck together, which means you're addressing both areas in a single session rather than treating the face and leaving the neck behind to age on its own timeline.
What to Know Before Your First Treatment
Preparation is straightforward. Arrive well-hydrated with a clean, makeup-free face. Your provider will cleanse the skin and apply a topical numbing agent to keep you comfortable during the treatment. Most patients describe the sensation as a mild prickling or vibrating feeling, and the numbing cream makes it very manageable.
Afterward, your skin will be red and may feel warm, similar to a sunburn. This is completely normal and typically resolves within 24 to 48 hours. During the first three days, you'll want to keep the skin clean and hydrated, avoid active skincare ingredients like retinol and vitamin C, and stay out of direct sun. Within a week, you'll start to notice the surface smoothing out and a clearer, more even complexion emerging.
The full collagen remodeling process takes several weeks, which is why the results continue to improve long after the redness has faded. And with each subsequent treatment in your series, the improvement compounds.

Microneedling as Part of a Bigger Plan
Microneedling is one of the most versatile treatments we offer because it pairs so well with other services. Patients who are investing in laser treatments like MOXI or structural treatments like Sofwave often find that adding a microneedling series between sessions keeps the skin's collagen production elevated and improves the overall outcome of their treatment plan.
It also works beautifully alongside injectables. Filler restores volume and contour. Sofwave lifts and tightens. Microneedling refines the surface and rebuilds the skin's texture and quality. When you layer these treatments strategically, each one amplifies the others, and the total result is far more impressive than any single treatment could achieve on its own.
That's the approach we take at MK Aesthetics. Every treatment recommendation is made in the context of your full skin health picture, not in isolation. Your microneedling series isn't just a standalone service. It's a piece of a strategy designed around your specific goals.
Not sure which level of SkinPen+ is right for you? Schedule a consultation and your provider will evaluate your skin and build a plan that makes sense for where you are and where you want to be.
